The Creator

A lifestyle sneaker inspired by two creative brands, Adidas and LEGO. Combining the customization aspect of Adidas and the hands-on building concept of LEGO.

The project focuses on learning VR modeling in Gravity Sketch through concept development and storytelling. Collaborating a footwear brand and a non-footwear brand, and develop a concept and visual elements that fits both.

ATHLEISURE LIFESTYLE

Adidas's athletic fashion style is classic. The concept of wearing activewear as your everyday outfit is casual, comfortable, and looks cool.

CUSTOMIZING - SNEAKER CULTURE

Customizing sneakers are really popular nowadays. People want to stand out and look different.

BUILDING FUNCTIONAL

LEGO Technic is a product line under LEGO. It builds mechanisms that are really complex and functional. I want people to be able to build and wear.

The story begins in Mike's bedroom...

Mike ordered the new Adidas and LEGO collaboration online and he finally gets to open the box. The packaging looks like what he usually gets with a LEGO packaging. He sees components of the shoes and an instruction manual in the box.

He is sucked into the box...

In the illusion, he sees the tagline of this collaboration.

"Calling all creator from Adidas and Lego."

"Everyone is a CREATOR"

The Mechanic shop...

He becomes the Adidas x LEGO mechanic shop manager who works with other LEGO man mechanics. They work together and assembled the shoe piece by piece.

PROCESS

LEARNING GRAVITY SKETCH

It was difficult for the first week, as I never use any VR 3D software before.

We learned the basic tools in Gravity sketch and try to use wireframe and surface to replicate some existing shoes.

3 CONCEPTS BASED ON THE MAIN IDEA

Using Gravity Sketch allow me to visualize my idea quickly in 3D and it is a new interactive way to present the story to the audience.

COMBINING 3 CONCEPTS

After getting feedback from instructor and peers, we agree Concept 1 could be the main and adding the customization aspect from Concept 2 and 3 with it.

BACK TO PAPER

I went back to paper for quick sketches to explore some more ideas. I came up with 3 different approaches and translated them into the Gravity Sketch models.

REFINEMENT

The spring-loaded idea got the most positive feedback during the critique. One major feedback I got is to refine the form to be more modern Adidas look, so I went back to paper and refine the silhouette to a modern running shoe, but keeping the features on it.

FINAL MODEL

With the Sub-Division modeling feature in Gravity Sketch, I am able to modify the form pretty accurately. Upper is made with the surfacing tool. The LEGO bricks and springs were downloaded.

STORY SCENE DEVELOPMENT

One of the advantages of VR modeling is to be able to bring your audience into the scene you developed. The second part of the project was to develop some scenes to help to tell the story behind the concept.

vr_week5_scene_2020-02-22-00-22-484.png

THE BEDROOM

I want the story to start at the bedroom, where I build my lego kit when I was little. Mike got his new ADIDAS x LEGO shoebox/ LEGO kit and He is ready to start building the shoes.

vr_midterm_2020-02-28-20-28-081.png

TRANSITION

Once he opens the box, he will fall into his imaginary world.

In the transition scene, he will see the Adidas and LEGO logos and the slogan of this concept...

"Calling all creator from ADIDAS

and LEGO"

"EVERYONE IS A CREATOR!"

vr_week5_scene_2020-02-22-10-22-06.png

THE AUTO BODY SHOP

Putting spring on shoes and be able to modify reminds me of the auto body shop. In this scene, Mike is imagining these little lego inspectors are assembling the shoes for him.

vr_week5_scene_2020-02-22-10-22-09.png

OUT TO THE TRACK

Once the shoe is geared up, it is ready to go. It can't wait to go out and bounce on the street.

THANK YOU
